Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says it was “a lot easier” for the Albanese government to request a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping “than it would have ever been” for former prime minister Scott Morrison.

He said Mr Morrison used “every domestic political opportunity he could find” to say Labor would be soft on China.

“Having said that, it then becomes a point on what you do with that relationship, how you get the trade sanctions lifted, how you get Australians released from prison … there are all these issues and you don’t think diplomacy will be enough, but its better than nothing,” he said.

He added the meeting between the Prime Minister and the Chinese President is about “preventing war”.
