This suburb of Mumbai is surrounded by oil refineries and chemical factories and living there has been unbearable for many.
Activists say the pollution there has killed over 100 people since the summer of 2017.
They’re protesting poor living conditions and industrial pollution in Mahul.
Around 30,000 people were relocated to Mahul in 2017 as part of a slum demolition drive by Mumbai’s Municipal Corporation.
But on October 28, hundreds of families left their rehabilitation homes to occupy the area they were evicted from.
The main diseases afflicting people are tuberculosis, asthma, paralytic attacks, cardiovascular diseases and cancer.
The illnesses are allegedly caused by a toxic mix of air pollution, water contamination and unsanitary conditions of the buildings.
The government has promised alternative accommodation to 5,500 families.
But for now residents are determined to make their voices heard.
