German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s choice – Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer – has been elected by the ruling German Christian Democratic Union party to succeed her as its leader.
The 56-year-old, dubbed as Mini-Merkel, takes over amid increasing discontent with mainstream parties and a surge in support for the far-right.
