New Zealand will move out of its most severe level of lockdown on April 28, 2020, as projections by a team of Chinese and US researchers found that the country is one of the best in the global crisis at balancing economics with disease controls. New Zealand had 1,451 infections and 14 deaths as of April 23, 2020, and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has suggested the nation could become the first in the world to eliminate the virus within its borders.
