Street vendors are on the wrong side of Beijing’s regulations again after the city authorities snubbed a call by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang to bring back roadside stalls. Li endorsed the “street vendor economy” during a visit to Shandong province in early June, saying that street stalls and small shops were “important sources of jobs” for China’s coronavirus-hit economy. However, Beijing Daily, a newspaper run by the city’s government, said the stalls were “not suitable” for the capital in an editorial piece days after Li’s remarks.
